Piers Ottey

Born in London, Piers trained at Chelsea School of Art in the 1970’s. He has been painting ever since. He moved to West Sussex in 1980 and set up The Mill Studio in 1994.
For Piers, the edges of the picture are important, so is the geometry between the edge and the centre. The square is his most common format; primary red and blue form his initial drawing. 'Surface quality should be special' he says and all viewers should feel free to feel the surface of the work. In 2006 Piers exhibited in Germany and in 2007 was shortlisted for the Bath University Painting Prize. He was subsequently awarded The 'peoples choice' prize. The winning painting 'Times Square with a bit of Norman Foster' was purchased by the university and hangs in the library.

Painting for me is a way of life. I live painting daily, whether building motorcycles, furniture, through travelling or simply looking and observing while waiting for a train – for me painting isn't about producing a product or series of products, but about expressing feelings for and observations on the world at any one time. The chair I built in '72 was a sort of painting. The motorcycle I built in '89 was a sort of painting. I see no difference between the 'statement' those things convey or the 13ft triptych of the Welsh mountains I painted in the '90s or the blue abstract images of Spain and Greece from around 2000.
