Sophie is a self taught artist working mainly in oils. She has recently started to produce prints as well.
She was born in London in 1968, and now lives in Gloucestershire with her family.
Her work draws on themes of childhood, magic, grief, literature, legends, life and death, dark and light and colour, lots of colour.
Sophie frequently uses colour fields to start a painting, then adds figurative imagery often from her imagination, but not always. Maybe a saint, an angel, a lone figure, a dying bull, set against blocks of bold colour. She strives to convey both poignancy and humour in her work.
She finds inspiration in dreams, books, daily life and memory. “I will look for a painting in anything, a story told to me, a song on the radio, a tyre on the side of the road, anything that sparks an image in my mind.”
Her influences range far and wide, living and dead. She sites Mark Rothko, Craigie Aitchison, Tom Anholt, Anne Rothenstein and Peter Doig among many.
Sophie has works in several private collections in the UK, USA, Mexico and Europe.
