Jane is based in Gloucestershire where she runs a busy studio pursuing her own practice and facilitating occasional workshops for other artists. She grew up in an artistic family, her father, Len Clatworthy, was a sculptor.
Jane graduated from Cheltenham Art School in 1989. She began her career as a freelance community artist, working with vulnerable and disenfranchised groups. In 2007 she established an artists collective “artdepot” who’s members put on art exhibitions and events.
In 2017 once her children, who she had brought up single handedly, had grown, she set up her painting studio, her work gaining a high commendation in the RSBA Open in 2020 and winning the Wing award in 2021. Her work can now be found in galleries around the UK Working in oil, cold wax and mixed media.
Jane paints on sturdy cradled panels and her physical engagement with the materials is intrinsic to her work She is a great colourist, and loses herself in mark-making, resulting in truly dynamic, abstract paintings as well as occasional lyrical riffs on landscapes. Jane describes her abstract painting as a way of distilling her life experiences.
