Janet Shrimpton
"My paintings take their inspiration from observations of the everyday and working from a photograph or drawing, develop into a semi-abstract image triggered by my imagination and a spontaneous play of mark-making with an emphasis on the textural qualities. The paint effects, markings and patterns in the gesso and scraping back layers to reveal different colours are all part of the process and guide the work as I don’t always have a clear idea of the outcome. I experiment using various mediums, including acrylic, varnish, gold paint, biro, crayon, oil and graphite on to gesso panels which lends itself to an interesting surface. I try to create something of the quality of ancient frescos and distressed walls which have a nostalgic and timeless effect." Janet Shrimpton
"Many thanks for the Janet Shrimpton painting we bought earlier today. It is home and looking resplendent – exactly what we were hoping for. Thank you."
Born in 1964 Janet Shrimpton is rapidly building a reputation and market for her serenely delicate and atmospheric floral landscapes. In her words, “My floral works are inspired by eastern art and the Japanese blossom paintings, with an interest in the surface quality created by using various mediums on gesso panels (similar to plaster and used for icon and fresco paintings). Initially working from a photograph or drawing, my paintings often develop into a semi-abstract image triggered by my imagination and a spontaneous play of mark-making. The paint effect and patterns in the gesso along with scraping back layers to reveal different colours are all part of the process and guide the work as the painting goes along. I try to create something of the quality of ancient frescos and distressed walls which have a nostalgic and timeless effect.”
Represented by Carina Haslam (CHA) since 2012, Janet has regularly sold out all her work in New York and London, and Janet was also listed as one of the top 20 standout artists at the Fair by Artnet website. She has recently started exhibiting in Singapore and has been successful there too.
