Lesley Birch

Born in Glasgow 1958, and a touring musician in the 1980s, Lesley now paints from her studio in York. She has exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the ING Discerning Eye and is a previous winner of The Artist Magazine Prize. From wild Scottish coasts to contemporary still lives, her paintings derive from her love of musical expression and a need to convey the feeling of what she sees and experiences.

“Flowers speak to me with their shapes and colours exuding character. I set up pots and vases in my studio and delve in. Even when they fade, the colours become muted and the leaves crispy - they are so full of character and movement. I like to work in series and often on paper using different media ranging from oils, oil pastels, gouache and inks to acrylics and pure pigments. I relish an expressive brush mark and layers of colour.”
